2014 – Recently I’d been wondering about a biblical saying that it was
easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to
enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Couldn’t imagine it being a worry to anyone now
but in the past, when religion was more central & important, those who were
rich must have been very concerned. It didn’t stop them, though. They would
have given away money on charitable works, founding colleges, setting up
almshouses, etc. They would even have employed a clergyman to constantly pray
for their soul to be admitted to Heaven.
At a rich person’s funeral now, that saying should be read
out, along with love of money is the root of all evil, to remind the family
& friends present that the deceased person was to be condemned to an
existence in a harrowing limbo & not the usual assurance of a good place.
